The Livery

Benton Harbor, Michigan

If you love classic old buildings, this is the brewery. From the outside to the inside, I’m a fan—this is what I picture when I think of an older town. Maybe one past its prime whose residents have abandoned it. But don’t let the building alone fool you; the beer and food are up to par.

(Keep in mind this is a short distance from North Pier Brewing; both are worth checking out. Can you say “road trip”? If you’re reasonably nearby that is. For me they provided the perfect distance for a day trip.)

Beer Selection

They had more beers than I expected. They had IPAs—a session, a hazy, and an American IPA—and simpler styles of beer this time; an Irish stout, an amber, and a wheat ale. They covered the spectrum in one way, but missed it in the experimental section. These were straight-forward styles, which isn’t always a bad thing.

There was an absence of sours, which I was not disappointed in. (Although lately, I have enjoyed the creativity of the style.)

Vibe

Again, this is the old school building vibe done right. What makes this place interesting is the multiple floors (although I’m not sure when all of them are open but have ventured to the top floor before). The outside seating area is nice too—plus, they are dog friendly.

I personally prefer sitting at the bar here, but that’s just me.

Service

Their service really sets them apart. They’re completely accommodating, allow dogs on their patio, will provide tastes, explain the beer and the food to you.

Beer Quality

The Livery does their beers well. For what they had, I was impressed. Their IPA game is decent. The simpler styles were done well. Would I have liked more experimentation? Probably. I do feel like in the past they’ve had a little more creativity but maybe my memory is failing me.

Food

Their pizzas impress me every time. One time I explored a Thai pizza here (delicious), and last time mixed it up with their BLT pizza with white alfredo sauce, mozzarella, bacon, tomato, and arugula. It was literally the perfect pizza.

They provide enough unique high-quality pizzas worth checking out. (Also, check out The Mitten for pizza as well.)

Overall

I recommend checking out The Livery for the building alone. I’d be a regular if I lived closer. (Same for North Pier.) All around these two breweries complement each other and make an hour trip completely worth it.
